History

The origin of Semiliguda College, Semiliguda can be traced back to the month of April 1984. When at a gathering a staunch and dedicated Bhoodan Karmi Sri Krushna Singh and a handful of education loving personalities of the locality conceived the idea of establishing a college in Semiliguda   town. Being a special invitee to the gathering Sri.Arun Kumar Samantray,I.A.S the then Collector of Koraput promised to  extend all sorts of help to give it a concrete shape. A highly spirited ilitiriate adivashi Late. Rudai Kamalu sitting and witnessing to proceedings of the gathering rushed to the fore-front and to the surprise of the declared to donate five acres of his own land to house Semiliguda College. And this immediately paved the way to translate the superb thoughts into action.

As an initial step in this direction Sj.Janaki Ballav Patnaik, the then Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha laid down the foundation stone of Semiliguda College, the brain-child of Sri.Krushna Singh and the much aspired educational temple of the tribal area, on the 9th day of august 1985. Sri Arun Kumar Samantray, I.A.S the 1st president of the governing body of the college formally opened the classes in the +2 arts deserted premises of Sevak Talim Kendra at Sunabeda-1.

The +2arts and commerce streams were accorded concurrence from the govt in the year 1986-89 respectively and affiliated to the CHSE(O) in the same sessions. And then the principal and a highly dedicated and spirited team of teachers rolled the wheels of Semiliguda college on its path of growth  and expansion.

Meanwhile, Sri. Krushna Singh with the assistance of some local contractors and builders steered the construction work of the college building. In this connection, special mention may be made of the authorities of NALCO, Damanjodi who have provide financial assistance to the tune of Rs.5 Lakhs to meet substantive cost of construction of the college building. After the completion of the first floor of the college building, it was formally inaugurated by Sj.Jayaram Pangi, the then Hon’ble Minister of State for agriculture and co-operation on the 20th days of august 1990 and the college  shifted from  Sevak Talim Kendra to its own building at Semiliguda on 6th   December 1990. The academic year of 190-1991 is yet another milestone in the history of college as the college was accorded govt. Concurrence in both +3 arts and commerce streams and was affiliated to Berhampur University in the same session. The institution sincerely owes its gratitude to Sri. Ashok Kumar   Thipathy, I.A.S, the then collector-cum-president of Governing Body of the college for his pioneering efforts in opening the degree classes in the college.

In the process of its evolution the college has gone a long distance. Throughout these days the sacred institution has never been devoid of its prime motto of promoting and fostering Higher Education College owns a double strayed building, a forty seated hostel for girl’s students and a library consisting of over 10,500 books on varied subjects. And above all the college is having a magnificent managing committee which manages the affairs of the college fairy and smoothly. The institution is grateful to the president and member of alumina truck owner’s association, Semiliguda who have been a continuous source of financial assistance for materializing its different academic projects. In order to cater to the needs of the local tribal students, the Govt. Had been pleased to accord its concurrence and recognition to science stream from the session 1996-97. Futher, honours classes in Political Science, History, and Odia in +3 arts stream and +3 commerce stream were opened in the session 1999-00 and 2004-05 respectively. Taking account the qualified faculty members on varied subjects, the regional directorate of Indira Gandhi National Open University, Koraput have been pleased to open a special study centre in the college campus in 2003-03 academic year which has so far been able to enrol hundreds of students both in conventional and technical subjects. Moreover, considering its adequate infrastructure and faculty the higher education department has opened a Govt.Vocational Junior College with two technical trades inside the college in the year 2004-05. The college has been covered under 2(F) and 12(B) of University Grants Commission since May 2007 and various financial grants have been received from UGC from time to time. Meanwhile, the college has grown into 28 years and has already observed the silver jubilee function in the year 2010. In keeping pace with the changing time and requirement the college has yet to go miles together. Many a goals has to be achieved in future. May the college march forward and venture into the beautiful future.

The College Coat Of Arms

The college has a coat of arms of its own encompassing in itself three distinct symbols of the industry, the nature and the burning lamp with a book.

The industry is the hall mark of all-round development of the nation both materially and otherwise. It is the means to the end of eradication of poverty and emancipation of the downtrodden and unprivileged ones. It is a weapon against unemployment and an assurance of work to masses. A powerful instrument for optimum exploitation of rich natural resource for the well-being of mankind industry is the centre of innovation and the light of molding shaping and advancing of human civilization.

The nature coupled with the mountain, forest and bird symbolise the paradise on the earth sheltering the innocent and selfless tribes and their immense love for the nature. It is the replica of the eternal beauty and sings the immortal songs of the rich cultural heritage of soil from the immemorial times.

The burning lamp spreads the rays of enlightenment and awakenment, the book represents the cannons of learning which dispels the darkness of ignorance and transforms from the state of being animality to humanity, while the from the holy Upanishad “ Tamosa Maa Jyotirgamaya” written at the top of the crest is a humble salutation to the “supreme soul” to lead human being from darkness to light and from ignorance to wisdom.
